“Urgent Health Alert: Measles Exposure Reported at Mall of America – Shoppers at Risk”

🚨 Urgent Health Alert: Measles Exposure at Mall of America 🚨

Minnesota health officials have issued a critical warning after an unvaccinated child with measles visited the Mall of America on May 24 between 5:00–9:00 PM, potentially exposing hundreds to the highly contagious virus. The source of the infection remains unknown, heightening concerns about possible community spread.

Who’s at Risk?

Anyone who was at the Mall of America during that time—especially those who are unvaccinated or have never had measles—should monitor for symptoms through June 14.

Symptoms to Watch For:

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes
  • Rash appearing 3–5 days after symptoms begin

Measles symptoms typically develop 7 to 14 days after exposure and can lead to serious, sometimes fatal, complications—particularly for infants, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

📈 Measles on the Rise in the U.S.

This case is part of a broader outbreak:

  • 4 confirmed cases in Minnesota in 2025, including this child and an adult infected during air travel.
  • 1,168 measles cases nationwide as of June 5, marking the largest U.S. outbreak since 2019.
  • 3 deaths reported, all among unvaccinated individuals.

Most cases are occurring in low-vaccination communities, where declining immunization rates are undermining herd immunity.

💉 Protect Yourself and Others

The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is 97% effective with two doses. Public health experts emphasize the urgent need to:

  • Boost vaccination rates
  • Combat misinformation
  • Protect vulnerable populations

If you or your child is unvaccinated, talk to your healthcare provider immediately about getting immunized.
