For one young Ohio couple, the joy of welcoming their newborn daughter quickly turned into a heartbreaking nightmare.
Ellieana Peyton arrived on March 4, fighting a rare and serious heart condition known as cardiomyopathy, where the left side of her heart was smaller than normal. Though her family faced the challenges with hope and strength, Ellieana spent her first weeks in the NICU at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, closely watched by dedicated medical staff.
But just as her parents stepped away briefly to shower, tragedy struck in an unimaginable way.
A devastating phone call shattered their world—Ellieana had fallen from her crib after a nurse accidentally left her baby monitor cords tucked away in her pocket. What was meant to be a moment of care and safety turned into a heartbreaking loss no parent should ever endure.

“The parents had just stepped home to shower when they received the devastating news that their baby had been dropped,” shared family friend Stella Dunlap on a GoFundMe page created to support the grieving family.
“They were informed that the nurse had accidentally kept the baby’s monitor cords in her pocket. When the nurse moved away, baby Ellieana was tragically dragged from her NICU crib.”
The Franklin County coroner’s report confirmed that Ellieana suffered a fractured skull and brain bleeds caused by the fall. The injuries were ruled accidental, but despite all medical efforts, she passed away on March 31.
“She brightened this world in her brief 29 days. Rest in peace, sweet Ellieana,” Dunlap wrote.

Ellieana’s family, still reeling from their unimaginable loss, remember her as a radiant little soul who touched everyone she met.
“Ellieana had the most contagious smile that could light up any room,” her obituary lovingly shares. “Her deep brown eyes held a quiet magic you could get lost in for hours. But her favorite place was always nestled in the warm embrace of her mommy, daddy, and family.”
Though her time here was heartbreakingly short, Ellieana’s spirit left an unforgettable mark on all who knew her. Now, her family faces the painful journey of grief, leaning on the support of their community as they search for answers and try to find some measure of peace.
In the midst of sorrow, they’ve expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of love and kindness.
“She was so deeply loved,” they said.

No parent should ever have to leave the hospital without their child. Yet, though Ellieana’s time with us was heartbreakingly brief, her memory—the sparkle of her smile and the boundless love she shared in just four short weeks—will live on forever. Rest in peace, sweet Ellieana. You will never be forgotten.
